Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) is a surgical hair restoration technique. Individual follicular units are removed from a donor area, usually the back of the scalp, and transplanted into areas with hair loss.
Because each unit is removed on its own through a tiny circular incision, FUE does not require a linear incision in the donor area. That is the main reason it has become one of the most widely performed hair restoration techniques. The transplanted hairs are permanent in most cases because they come from areas that are genetically less sensitive to the hormone that causes pattern hair loss.
A follicular unit is a natural group of hairs that grow from one opening.
Each follicular unit naturally contains approximately 1–4 hairs.
The procedure uses micro-punches, typically 0.7–1.2 mm in diameter.
Punch instruments can be manual, motorized, or robotic.
Donor hair can sometimes be harvested from the beard or other body regions.
Most FUE sessions are done in a single day under local anesthesia. Larger sessions can take several hours, and some clinics split them across two days.
Step 1
The surgeon examines your scalp, estimates how much donor hair is available, and designs a hairline that suits your face and your likely future hair loss.
Step 2
The donor area is trimmed short, often to a few millimeters, and numbed with local anesthetic so the grafts can be removed comfortably.
Step 3
Using a micro-punch, the surgeon or device scores around each unit and lifts it out. Each unit is removed one at a time.
Step 4
Tiny openings are made in the thinning or bald area. Their angle, direction and density determine how natural the result looks.
Step 5
The grafts are checked, sorted by hair count, and placed into the recipient sites. Single-hair units usually go at the front hairline for a softer edge.
Step 6
You receive instructions for washing, sleeping position and activity limits. Small scabs form around each graft and fall off over the following days.
The other common method is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), sometimes called the strip method. Both move the same kind of grafts. They differ in how those grafts are collected.
| FUE | FUT | |
|---|---|---|
| How grafts are collected | Individual units are excised with micro-punches | A thin strip of scalp is removed and divided into grafts under a microscope |
| Donor scarring | Many tiny, round, dot-like marks | One linear scar across the donor area |
| Short hairstyles | Usually easier to wear, since scars are small and scattered | The scar can show if the hair is cut very short |
| Session length | Often longer for large sessions | Often shorter for the same number of grafts |
| Early recovery | Usually less discomfort in the donor area | Stitches or staples are placed and later removed |
Hair transplants do not show their final result right away. Transplanted hairs go through a rest phase before they start growing again, so the first months can look worse before they look better. Timing varies from person to person.
Estimate the number of grafts you may need and calculate your potential hair transplant cost based on your hair loss stage and treatment requirements. The final graft count and cost may vary depending on your donor hair density, coverage goals, and the surgeon's assessment.

Good candidates usually have stable hair loss, enough healthy donor hair, and realistic expectations. People who like to wear their hair short, or who want to avoid a linear scar, often prefer FUE. A surgeon can also assess whether medication should be started first to slow further loss.
Donor hair is a limited supply, and transplanting does not stop hair loss that continues in untreated areas. Possible side effects include swelling, temporary numbness, infection, and uneven growth. Results depend heavily on the experience of the surgical team, so it is worth checking credentials and reviewing before-and-after photos of patients with hair like yours.
